Mohammed Bin Rashid University of Medicine and Health Sciences’ (MBRU) Hamdan Bin Mohammed College of Dental Medicine (HBMCDM) opened its doors to a number of dental students from 9 different nationalities and backgrounds on September 10, 2017.

A number of dental graduates were admitted into various Master of Science programs including Endodontics, Orthodontics, Prosthodontics and Pediatric Dentistry. UAE nationals, particularly females, make up a large percentage of the student body, and the remaining number of students come from a number of countries across the Middle East, Asia, Europe, and North America.

The Dean of HBMCDM, Professor Athanasios Athanasiou greeted the new intake of students with an opening address this morning, welcoming the new students to the MBRU family. He said, “over its first four academic years of existence, HBMCDM has made significant contribution to the Country by providing a great range of specialized dental services through high quality advanced dental education, research and community engagement for oral health awareness.”

Further welcome speeches were delivered by MBRU’s Vice Chancellor Dr. Amer Sharif, Provost Mutairu Ezimokhai, and Dr. Khawla Belhoul, the Director of Dubai Dental Clinic (DDC), MBRU’s clinical partner, which plays a major role in the postgraduate dental student’s clinical training.

Earlier this year in the presence of His Highness Sheikh Ahmed Bin Saeed Al Maktoum, Chancellor of the Mohammed Bin Rashid University of Medicine and Health Sciences (MBRU) and Chairperson of the Board of Trustees, MBRU celebrated the first graduation of 33 postgraduate dental students from HBMCDM, of which 25 were UAE Nationals.

MBRU selected March 20 to celebrate the graduation as the day coincides with two global observances – International Day of Happiness and World Oral Health Day. These observances signify how oral health is an important component of public health and the role of dentists in contributing to patient happiness and wellbeing.

These dental graduates are officially recognized as specialists upon graduation by UAE health authorities.

The dental student’s orientation is planned over a three-day period, the day kicked off with an ice breaker activity, conducted by MBRU’s student services team, followed by a meet and greet session between the students, the academic and administrative staff of the College, and the existing students from previous years.

Following the morning session, the students were taken on a tour and introduction of MBRU’s facilities, then had a special welcome activity from the resident council representative.
